Flights to Spain from Milan
From Milan, Vueling flies direct to 25 destinations in Spain, the largest network of any airport in Italy. Barcelona and Madrid are around 2 hours away, and from there the Mediterranean, Andalusia, the islands and the Atlantic north all open up.
Spain is really several countries in one, and the choice that shapes the trip is not when to go but which one to visit. With distances this short, a weekend is enough for one city and a week lets you cover two or three.
What documents you need to travel to Spain
Spain and Italy are both in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so Italian and other EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa.
Even without border checks between the 2 countries, you must carry your documents with you throughout the trip and make sure they have not expired before you book. The European Health Insurance Card covers public healthcare during your stay. If you are travelling with children or hold a passport from a non-EU country, check your situation on the travel documents page.
What to know when you land in Spain
From the airport into town. The main gateways have good public transport, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and commuter trains link the terminals with Atocha. In Malaga, the commuter train serves both the centre and the Costa del Sol, and in Palma the shuttle bus covers the 8 km to the old town.
Mealtimes. Lunch in Spain is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner from 21:00, even later than in Italy. Many kitchens do not open before then, so on your first day it pays to plan around local hours.
High-speed rail. The AVE links Madrid and Barcelona in about 2 and a half hours, and lines to Seville, Malaga and Valencia run out of Madrid. Stations sit right in the city centres, which makes it easy to string together 2 or 3 destinations without going back to the airport.
Climate by region. In summer the Mediterranean mainland is much like northern Italy: dry and hot. The Atlantic north, from Bilbao to Galicia, stays damp and green all year, and the interior tops 40°C in August. The Canary Islands keep a steady temperature.
The currency is the euro. Spain uses plug types C and F, at 230V.
What to do in Spain
City breaks: Barcelona and Madrid
Barcelona brings together the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, with a beach inside the city and the Boqueria market on the Ramblas. Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than a kilometre, with Retiro Park next door and La Latina for tapas.
Andalusia
Seville has the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, flamenco in Triana and tiled courtyards. Granada is home to the Alhambra and the Generalife, Córdoba to the Mosque-Cathedral, and Malaga to the Picasso Museum and the Costa del Sol.
The islands
Palma de Mallorca pairs a Gothic cathedral on the seafront with the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site, while Ibiza brings coves and nightlife. Tenerife and Gran Canaria work all year round, with volcanic scenery and beaches. Tenerife also stands out for its black-sand beaches and Mount Teide.
The green north
The least Mediterranean side of Spain: Atlantic, rainy and with a concentration of acclaimed restaurants that is hard to match. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the pintxos of the Casco Viejo, San Sebastián has La Concha and the best food in the country, and Santiago de Compostela marks the end of the Camino de Santiago.
Luggage for your flight to Spain
What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.
Special equipment such as a surfboard, a bike or ski gear has its own conditions and must be arranged in advance. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
