Travel from Geneva

Flights to Spain from Geneva

Vueling flies direct from Geneva to 21 destinations in Spain. Barcelona is around 1 hour and 40 minutes away, and from there the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia, the islands and the Atlantic north are all within reach.

Spain works like several countries in one, so the choice that shapes your trip is which part to visit rather than when. At these distances, a weekend is enough for one city. With a week you can take in two or three.

What documents you need to travel to Spain

Spain belongs to the European Union and the Schengen Area, and Switzerland is also part of Schengen without being an EU member. Swiss and EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa.

Make sure it has not expired before you book, because you cannot board with an out-of-date document. Citizens of non-EU countries should check whether they need a visa on the travel documents page before confirming their booking.

What to know when you land in Spain

Plug sockets. Spain uses plug types C and F, the round two-pin kind, at 230V.

From the airport into town. The main airports are well connected, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and commuter trains link the terminals with Atocha. In Malaga, the commuter train serves both the city centre and the Costa del Sol.

Mealtimes. Lunch in Spain is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner starts from 21:00, much later than in Switzerland. Plenty of kitchens do not open any earlier, which is worth keeping in mind when you plan your first day.

High-speed rail. Madrid and Barcelona are about 2 and a half hours apart, and lines run from Madrid to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. Stations sit in the middle of each city, and trains run with a punctuality that stands up well to Swiss standards.

The currency is the euro, and Swiss francs are not accepted in Spain. Cards work almost everywhere.

What to do in Spain

Barcelona and Catalonia

Barcelona brings together the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, with a beach inside the city and the Boqueria market on the Ramblas. Catalonia has much more to offer beyond its capital. The Costa Brava, the Priorat wineries and the Catalan Pyrenees are destinations in their own right.

Madrid and central Spain

Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than 1 km, with historic markets and neighbourhoods such as Malasaña and La Latina for the evening. Toledo and Segovia are under an hour away by train.

Andalusia

Seville has the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, flamenco in Triana and courtyards lined with tiles. Granada is home to the Alhambra and the Generalife, Córdoba to the Mosque-Cathedral, and Malaga to the Picasso Museum and the Costa del Sol.

The islands

Palma de Mallorca pairs a Gothic cathedral facing the sea with the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site whose mountain cycling routes draw Swiss riders every spring. Ibiza is all coves and nightlife, while Tenerife and Gran Canaria let you swap the Alpine winter for milder temperatures.

Luggage for your flight to Spain

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that goes under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

Sports equipment, musical instruments and bulky items have their own conditions, so check them well ahead of your trip. You will find the current rules in Vueling’s luggage policy.
