Flights to Spain from Marrakech
Vueling flies direct from Marrakech to 18 Spanish destinations. Malaga and Seville are around 2 hours away, while Barcelona and Madrid take closer to 2 and a half hours.
With so many airports to choose from, where you land can shape the rest of the trip: Andalusia, the big cities, the Mediterranean coast or the Atlantic north.
What documents you need to travel to Spain
Spain is part of the Schengen Area, which for Moroccan citizens means a visa application before travelling. It is worth starting it several weeks ahead.
What usually applies to Moroccan nationals:
- A Schengen visa, applied for before the trip at the Spanish consulate or embassy in Morocco. Processing times vary, and they are what decides when you need to start planning the journey.
- A valid passport, valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the previous 10 years.
- Proof of accommodation: a booking, a letter of invitation or a rental contract.
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
- Travel insurance with medical cover, required in order to apply for the visa.
If you hold EU nationality or are resident in a European Union country, different conditions apply. Check the current information on the travel documents page and with the relevant consulate before you book.
As this is a flight from outside the Schengen Area, you will go through passport control before boarding. Allow for that extra time at the airport.
What to know when you land in Spain
From the airport into town. The main gateways are well connected, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and commuter trains link up with Atocha. In Malaga, the commuter train serves the city centre and the Costa del Sol, and in Seville the airport express bus runs to Santa Justa.
Mealtimes. Lunch in Spain is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner starts from 21:00, with many kitchens closed before then. Dinner is later than in Morocco, and it can take a couple of days to adjust.
High-speed rail. The AVE links Madrid and Barcelona in around 2 and a half hours, and lines run from Madrid to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. Stations sit in the city centres, so arriving in one city and leaving from another works better than a simple return.
Climate by region. The south and the Mediterranean have mild winters and very hot summers, with the interior going above 40°C in August. The north, from Bilbao to Galicia, is rainy and cool all year round, which surprises many people arriving from Marrakech.
Spain uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Plug sockets are types C and F, with round two-pin plugs, at 230V.
What to do in Spain
Andalusia: the legacy of al-Andalus
This is the region that will feel most familiar if you are coming from Marrakech. Seville has the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, a minaret before it became a bell tower, and the Santa Cruz quarter. Granada has the Alhambra and the Generalife, and Córdoba the Mosque-Cathedral. All three are World Heritage Sites.
City breaks: Barcelona and Madrid
Barcelona brings together the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, plus a beach within the city and the Boqueria market. Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than a kilometre, with La Latina for tapas and street life that goes on late into the night.
The Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands
Malaga combines the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba and the Costa del Sol, with Ronda and the white villages of the surrounding hills an hour away. Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza are reached directly, with no stop on the mainland. Expect coves and the Serra de Tramuntana.
The Atlantic north
The part of Spain least like Morocco: green, damp and rainy all year. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the pintxos of the Casco Viejo, San Sebastián has La Concha, and Santiago de Compostela marks the end of the Camino with a cathedral that is a World Heritage Site.
Luggage for your flight to Spain
What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.
For a long trip, or if you are visiting family, working out your luggage while you book avoids surprises at the check-in desk. Check the current conditions in the Vueling luggage policy.
