Flights to Spain from Cairo
From Cairo, Vueling flies direct to 17 destinations in Spain. The flight takes around 5 hours to the Mediterranean mainland, and longer to the Canary Islands.
Spain is not one destination. What shapes the whole trip is which of the 4 Spains you fly into: the big cities, the Mediterranean coast, the Andalusian south with its al-Andalus heritage, or the volcanic Atlantic islands.
What documents you need to travel to Spain
Spain is part of the Schengen Area, and for Egyptian citizens that means an application process before travelling, one that is best started several weeks ahead.
What usually applies to an Egyptian national:
- A Schengen visa, applied for before the trip at the Spanish consulate or embassy in Egypt. Processing times vary, and they are what decides when you need to start planning the trip.
- A valid passport, valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the previous 10 years.
- Proof of accommodation: a booking, a letter of invitation or a contract.
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
- Travel insurance with medical cover, required in order to apply for the visa.
Requirements change and depend on each individual case. Check the current information on the travel documents page and with the relevant consulate before you book.
What to know when you land in Spain
From the airport into town. The main gateways have good transport links. In Madrid, the metro and the Cercanías commuter trains run from the Barajas terminals to Atocha. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Malaga, the Cercanías train serves both the city centre and the Costa del Sol.
Mealtimes. Lunch in Spain runs from 14:00 to 16:00 and dinner starts from 21:00, with many kitchens closed before then. Lunch comes later than it does in Egypt, while dinner keeps a similar hour. Most people need a couple of days to fall into step.
High-speed rail. Madrid and Barcelona are around 2 and a half hours apart by train, and Madrid is the starting point for the lines to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. The stations sit right in the city centres, so arriving in one city and leaving from another works better than a round trip.
Climate by region. The north is damp and cool all year, with frequent rain. The interior goes above 40°C in summer and gets cold in winter. The Mediterranean coast and the Canary Islands stay mild, and on the islands the seasons barely change.
Spain uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Plugs are round two-pin, types C and F, at 230V.
What to do in Spain
Andalusia: the legacy of al-Andalus
This is the region that will feel most familiar if you are coming from Cairo. Granada has the Alhambra and the Generalife, Córdoba has the Mosque-Cathedral and its forest of columns, and Seville has the Real Alcázar and the Giralda, a minaret long before it became a bell tower. All 3 are World Heritage Sites.
City breaks: Madrid and Barcelona
Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than 1 km, with the Retiro next door and street life that carries on late into the night. Barcelona adds the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Mediterranean, 10 minutes from the centre.
The Canary Islands
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura share volcanic landscapes and steady temperatures all year. Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain, and Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote is a field of recent lava you can explore at ground level.
The Atlantic north
The side of Spain furthest from the usual picture of the country: green, damp and rainy all year round. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the pintxos of the Casco Viejo, while Santiago de Compostela marks the end of the Camino with a cathedral that is a World Heritage Site.
Luggage for your flight to Spain
What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.
For a trip of several weeks, or if you are visiting family, working out your luggage when you book avoids surprises at the check-in desk. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
Frequently asked questions about flying from Cairo to Spain
Do Egyptians need a visa to travel to Spain?
Yes. Egyptian citizens need a Schengen visa to enter Spain. You apply before the trip at the Spanish consulate or embassy in Egypt, with a valid passport, proof of accommodation, proof of funds and medical insurance. Processing times vary, so it is best to start the application several weeks before you plan to travel.
How long is the flight from Cairo to Spain?
It depends on where you land. The direct flight from Cairo to Barcelona or Madrid takes around 5 hours. Flights to southern mainland Spain take a similar time, while the Canary Islands are the longest routes, as the islands sit out in the Atlantic, more than 1,000 km from the continent.

Which Spanish city should I fly into for my final destination?
Madrid is the most versatile gateway for central and southern Spain, with the whole high-speed rail network leaving from Atocha. Barcelona works better if you are heading to Catalonia or along the Mediterranean coast. For Andalusia, Seville and Malaga both have their own airports with good links to the city centre.
Can I visit several Spanish cities on one trip?
Yes, and most people do. The high-speed rail network links Madrid and Barcelona in under 3 hours, and Madrid and Seville in around 2 and a half hours. The stations are in the city centres, so moving from one destination to the next never means going back to the airport.

Yes, every flight operated by Vueling does, and joining the programme is free. You collect tier points on each flight.
