Flights to Spain from Malta
From Malta, Vueling flies direct to 22 destinations in Spain. Barcelona is around 2 and a half hours away, and from there the rest opens up: the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia, the islands and the Atlantic north.
It is a hop between two ends of the Mediterranean that share the sea, the diet and long hours of sunshine. Spain is really four countries in one, and what shapes your trip is which of them you choose: the cities, the Mediterranean coast, the islands or the green north.
What documents you need to travel to Spain
Spain and Malta are both in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so Maltese and other EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport. No visa is required.
Check the expiry date before you book, because you cannot board with an expired document. Children travelling with you each need their own. The European Health Insurance Card covers public healthcare during your stay, and EU roaming works at no extra cost. If you hold another nationality, check your situation on the travel documents page.
What to know when you land in Spain
From the airport into town. The main gateways are well connected, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Malaga, the local train serves both the city centre and the Costa del Sol, and in Palma the shuttle bus covers the 8 km to the old town.
Plug sockets. Spain uses round two-pin plugs, types C and F, at 230V.
Mealtimes. Lunch in Spain is served between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner from 21:00, later than in Malta. Many kitchens do not open before then, and in smaller towns shops also close in the middle of the day.
High-speed rail. The AVE links Madrid and Barcelona in around 2 and a half hours, and lines run from Madrid to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. Stations sit right in the city centre, so you can string together 2 or 3 destinations without going back to the airport.
The currency is the euro. Spanish is the official language, with co-official languages in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, and English gets you by in tourist areas.
What to do in Spain
Barcelona and the Catalan coast
Barcelona brings together the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, with a beach inside the city and the Boqueria market on the Ramblas. To the north, the Costa Brava adds coves and fishing villages an hour away by car.
Andalusia
Seville has the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, flamenco in Triana and courtyards lined with tiles. Go in spring or autumn, as the summer heat is crushing. Granada is home to the Alhambra and the Generalife, while Malaga has the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba and the Costa del Sol.
The islands
Swapping one Mediterranean island for another makes sense when the scale changes. Palma de Mallorca pairs a Gothic cathedral facing the sea with the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site, and Ibiza brings the coves and the nightlife. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are another ocean entirely.
The green north
This is the Spain least like Malta: Atlantic, rainy and green all year round, with a concentration of acclaimed restaurants that few places can match. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the pintxos of the Casco Viejo, and Santiago de Compostela is where the Camino ends.
Luggage for your flight to Spain
What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.
For a city weekend, hand luggage is usually enough. For a week on the coast, a family trip or if you are coming home with shopping, checking a bag may be more practical. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
