Travel from Ibiza

Flights to France from Ibiza

From Ibiza, Vueling flies direct to 7 French cities: Paris, Nice, Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Nantes and Strasbourg. Paris is around 2 hours away, and the cities in the south are closer still.

The big advantage is leaving the island without a stopover on the mainland. With distances this short, flight time hardly matters. What matters is where you start: the north, the French Riviera, the Rhône valley or the Atlantic coast each lead to a very different trip.

What documents you need to travel to France

France and Spain are both in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so Spanish citizens only need a valid Spanish ID card (DNI) or passport, with no visa or extra paperwork.

On Schengen flights you must show the physical DNI: the digital version is only valid on flights within Spain, and it is a detail that causes problems at the check-in desk. Check the expiry date before booking, as the document has to cover your whole stay. If you are travelling with children, each one needs their own. If you hold another nationality, check your situation on the travel documents page.

What to know when you land in France

From the airport into the city. Paris is the one that needs planning ahead: its airports are a long way out, and the journey by train or bus takes around an hour, so it is worth looking into before you book accommodation. Nice is the opposite, with the airport right by the Promenade and the tram reaching the centre in a few minutes. Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Nantes all have a shuttle or a direct tram from the terminal.

The TGV. This is what turns 7 airports into a gateway to the whole country. Paris and Lyon are 2 hours apart by train, and Marseille is a little over 3 hours from the capital. Stations sit right in the city centres, so flying into one city and home from another works better than going in and out the same way.

Climate by region. Paris is grey and rainy for much of the autumn and winter, and a good deal colder than you might expect coming from Ibiza. The Mediterranean south gets sunshine almost all year, with the mistral as a constant. The Alps change completely from one season to the next.

Mealtimes. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 14:00 and dinner from 19:30, and many kitchens close after 22:00. Turn up for dinner at 22:30 and you may not get a table.

The currency is the euro, and plug sockets are types C and E, at 230V. French is the official language, and English works in tourist areas.

What to do in France

Paris and the north

Paris packs the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower into an area you can cover on foot, with Le Marais, Montmartre and Saint-Germain-des-Prés as neighbourhoods to get lost in. The Palace of Versailles is half an hour away by suburban train.

The French Riviera from Nice

In Nice you land right by the sea. From there, the coastal train reaches Cannes, Antibes and Monaco in under an hour, so you can explore the whole Riviera without a car. The Matisse museum and the Marc Chagall museum are in the city itself, and the old town blends Italian and Provençal influences.

Lyon and the Rhône valley

Lyon is a recognised gastronomic capital, with its bouchons and a historic quarter, Vieux-Lyon, that is a World Heritage Site. Around the city lie the vineyards of Beaujolais and the northern Rhône. From Marseille you head into Provence: Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and the lavender fields of the Luberon.

The Atlantic coast and the east

Bordeaux has a historic centre listed as a World Heritage Site, with Saint-Émilion half an hour away and the Arcachon dunes on the coast. Nantes opens up Brittany and the Loire Valley, while Strasbourg is the crossroads with Germany, home to Petite France and the Gothic cathedral.

Luggage for your flight to France

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

For a weekend in any of the 7 cities, a cabin bag is usually enough. If your plan strings several cities together by train, deciding this while you book saves you carrying too much between stations. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
