Flights to the Czech Republic from Bilbao

Vueling flies direct from Bilbao to Prague in about 3 hours. It is the only way into the country from Bilbao, and everything else starts from there: Brno, Český Krumlov and rural Bohemia are all within reach by road or by train.

Prague keeps the same time as Bilbao, so there is no clock to adjust and your arrival day starts when you expect it to. A long weekend is enough for Prague. A week gives you time to get out of it.

What documents you need to travel to the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area, so Spanish and other EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa.

On Schengen flights the physical Spanish ID card (DNI) is required: the digital version is only valid on flights within Spain, and that detail catches people out at the check-in desk. Make sure your document stays valid for the whole of your stay. If you hold another nationality, check your case on the travel documents page before booking.

What to know when you land in the Czech Republic

From the airport into the city. You land at Václav Havel Airport, to the west of Prague. There is no direct metro link from the terminal: you either combine a bus with the metro or take the express bus to the centre, and both options get you there in under 40 minutes.

The Czech koruna. The country does not use the euro, even though it is in the European Union. Cards work well in Prague, but it is worth carrying some cash once you leave the capital. Bureaux de change in the tourist centre offer very uneven terms, so a cash machine is usually the more predictable option.

A continental climate. Summers are warm and sunny, good for terraces and festivals, while winters are cold and bring snow, especially in rural areas. Spring and autumn mean mild temperatures and a far less crowded Prague.

Getting around. Prague has a metro, trams and buses covering the whole city, and the tram is also the best way to see it without losing a morning. Between cities, trains and intercity coaches work well and are what most people use.

The Czech Republic uses type C and E plugs, at 230V, and keeps the same time as Bilbao.

What to do in the Czech Republic

Prague

Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau sit side by side in a historic centre listed as a World Heritage Site. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle with St Vitus Cathedral, the astronomical clock on Old Town Square and the Jewish quarter of Josefov draw most of the visitors. Vinohrady and Žižkov, on the other hand, show the city people live in for the rest of the year, with shorter queues and better prices.

Český Krumlov

About 3 hours from Prague by road. A medieval town with a Renaissance castle and the Vltava curling around it, one of the most photogenic in Central Europe. As a day trip it is a long one, so it pays to stay the night and see the town first thing, before the coaches arrive.

Brno and Moravia

The country’s second city, with a lively student scene and celebrated functionalist architecture: Villa Tugendhat is a World Heritage Site. Around it, South Moravia is the main Czech wine region, something few people would expect from a country so closely tied to beer.

Rural Bohemia

The spa town of Karlovy Vary and Bohemian Switzerland National Park, with its sandstone formations and gorges. This is the side of the country most people discover on a second trip, and the one that feels furthest from the pace of central Prague.

Luggage for your flight to the Czech Republic

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that goes under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

If you travel in winter, your coat will take up far more room than you think, because Prague has a properly cold continental winter. Sorting out your luggage while you book saves you surprises at the airport. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.

Frequently asked questions about flying from Bilbao to the Czech Republic

How long is the flight from Bilbao to Prague?

The direct flight between Bilbao and Prague takes around 3 hours, with no stops, and lands at Václav Havel Airport, to the west of the city. Prague also keeps the same time as Bilbao, so there is no need to change your watch and your arrival day starts exactly as planned.

How do I get from Prague airport to the city centre?

The metro does not run directly to Václav Havel Airport. You can combine a bus with the metro network or take the express bus into central Prague. Either way, the journey takes less than 40 minutes, and once you are in the city the metro, trams and buses cover every district.

Do Spanish citizens need a visa for the Czech Republic?

No. The Czech Republic is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area, so for Spanish citizens a valid physical Spanish ID card (DNI) is enough. The digital DNI is only valid on flights within Spain. Check the expiry date before booking, because the document has to cover the whole stay.

Does the Czech Republic use the euro?

No. The official currency is the Czech koruna, even though the country is a member of the European Union. Cards work well in Prague, but it is worth having cash with you outside the capital, and cash machines usually offer more predictable terms than the bureaux de change in the centre.

When is the best time to visit the Czech Republic?

Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures and a less crowded Prague. Summer is lively, with festivals and packed terraces. In December the Christmas markets are a big draw, although the continental cold is intense and you will want to come prepared, especially if you head out into rural areas, where winter brings snow.

Do flights from Bilbao to Prague earn Vueling Club points?

Yes, every flight operated by Vueling does, and joining the programme is free. You collect tier points on each flight. As you move up a tier, you get priority boarding: Priority boarding from the Plus tier and the highest boarding priority at the Premium tier, which makes a difference at busy airports.
