Flights to Norway from Barcelona

Vueling connects Barcelona with Norway through two very different gateways: Oslo, a little over 3 hours away, and Tromsø, already inside the Arctic Circle. Being able to land straight in the Arctic without going through the capital is what sets this destination apart from almost any other in Europe.

Which one you pick shapes the whole trip. Oslo is the gateway to the western fjords and the south of the country. Tromsø means the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer, with no stopovers along the way.

What documents you need to travel to Norway

Norway is not a member of the European Union, but it does belong to the Schengen Area, so Spanish and other EU citizens need only a valid national ID card or passport for tourist stays; no visa is required.

On Schengen flights the Spanish ID card (DNI) has to be the physical card: the digital version is only valid on flights within Spain. If you are travelling with children, each one needs their own valid document. If you hold another nationality, check your situation on the travel documents page before booking.

What to know when you land in Norway

From the airport to the centre. The two airports could hardly be more different. Oslo Airport is about 50 km from the city, and the express train reaches the central station in just over 20 minutes. Tromsø’s airport, on the other hand, is a few minutes from the centre by bus or taxi: once you land, you have practically arrived.

Currency. Norway’s currency is the Norwegian krone. It is one of the countries where the least cash changes hands: cards work everywhere, including on buses and in small museums.

Light matters more than cold. In summer the north never gets dark and the south has very long days. Winter is the reverse, and in Tromsø darkness is almost constant for weeks, which is exactly what makes the northern lights visible. Plan your activities around the light, not just the temperature.

Getting around. Trains, buses and ferries are well timed with one another. Among the fjords, the ferry is not just a way across but part of what you came to see.

Norway uses type C and F plug sockets at 230V, and English is spoken to a very high standard throughout the country.

What to do in Norway

Oslo

World-class museums, contemporary Nordic cooking and architecture that sets the historic beside the radically modern. The Aker Brygge waterfront, right on the fjord, is the obvious first stop. You can walk up onto the roof of Snøhetta’s Opera House, Vigeland Park brings together more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, and the Oseberg Viking ship is worth a morning at the museum on its own.

The western fjords

Trains from Oslo cross the mountain plateau to Bergen on one of Europe’s best-known rail journeys, with connections to the Sognefjord and the Nærøyfjord, a World Heritage Site. Voss and Flåm are the starting points for the trains and ferries that explore them, while Preikestolen and Trolltunga lie further south. It takes several days, so plan it as a trip in its own right rather than an excursion.

Tromsø and the Arctic

In winter it is one of the best places in Europe to see the northern lights, and in summer the midnight sun completely changes the rhythm of the day. Around the city there is snowshoeing, dog sledding and hiking, depending on the season. With a direct flight from Barcelona, a long weekend here is realistic.

The Lofoten Islands

Mountains that drop sheer into the sea, fishing villages and a light that draws photographers all year round. You get there on a connecting flight with a local airline from Tromsø or Oslo, booked separately, so the islands take more planning than anywhere else on this page.

Luggage for your flight to Norway

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

For Norway, and especially the north, warm clothing takes up far more room than you expect. Sorting out your luggage when you book avoids surprises at the check-in desk. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.

Frequently asked questions about flying from Barcelona to Norway

Which Norwegian cities does Vueling fly to from Barcelona?

Vueling flies direct from Barcelona to Oslo and to Tromsø. Tromsø lies inside the Arctic Circle, so you can reach the north of the country from Barcelona without having to change planes in Oslo. Use the search box on this page to check availability for your dates.

How long is the flight from Barcelona to Oslo?

The direct flight between Barcelona and Oslo takes a little over 3 hours. Tromsø is much further north, so that journey is longer. Oslo Airport is about 50 km from the city, and the express train links it to the central station in just over 20 minutes.

How do I get from the airport to the city centre in Norway?

In Oslo, the express train reaches the central station in just over 20 minutes, covering the 50 km between the airport and the city. Tromsø is the opposite case: the airport is so close to the centre that a bus or taxi gets you into town in a matter of minutes.

Do Spanish citizens need a visa to travel to Norway?

No. Norway is part of the Schengen Area, although not of the European Union, so for tourist stays a valid physical Spanish ID card (DNI) or a passport is enough. The digital DNI is only valid on flights within Spain. Check your document’s expiry date before you book.

When can you see the northern lights in Norway?

In the months of long nights, and only when the sky is clear, which is the deciding factor. Tromsø is the usual base for chasing them because of its latitude. They are not visible in summer, but in return the sun barely sets and the day seems to go on almost for ever.

Do flights from Barcelona to Norway earn Vueling Club points?

Yes, all flights operated by Vueling do. You collect tier points on every one you take. As you move up a tier, you get priority boarding: Priority boarding from the Plus tier and the highest boarding priority at the Premium tier, which makes a difference at busy airports.
