Flights to the UK from Oviedo

From Oviedo, Vueling flies direct to London, Edinburgh and Birmingham. London is around 2 hours away, and the northern destinations take a little longer.

Where you land shapes the whole trip. London for a city break, Edinburgh for Scotland and the Highlands, Birmingham for the Midlands and the Cotswolds, the last with far fewer international tourists.

What documents you need to travel to the UK

The UK is no longer part of the European Union or the Schengen Area, so a passport is compulsory and the Spanish ID card (DNI) is not accepted, not even for children.

As well as a passport that is valid for your whole stay, Spanish citizens need an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before boarding. It is the requirement most people find out about too late, and without it you will not be allowed to board. No visa is needed for short tourist stays.

Bear in mind, too, that the European Health Insurance Card is not valid in the UK. If you are travelling with children without both parents, you should carry the relevant authorisation. Entry requirements are changing, so check the current conditions on the travel documents page before you book.

As this is a non-Schengen flight, you will go through passport control. Allow for that extra time at the airport.

What to know when you land in the UK

From the airport to the city centre. In London it depends on which airport you land at, and the journey can take anywhere from half an hour to an hour by train or Underground, so check before you book accommodation. Edinburgh has a tram from the terminal to the city centre in just over half an hour, and Birmingham has direct trains from the airport itself.

Plugs. The UK uses type G plugs, with 3 rectangular pins, at 230V.

The pound. The UK’s currency is the pound sterling, and euros are not accepted as payment. Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, buses and the Underground included. Scotland issues its own banknotes, which are valid throughout the UK, although they sometimes cause hesitation in shops in England.

Driving is on the left. If your plans include a hire car, especially for the Highlands or the Cotswolds, keep this in mind from the start. Rural roads are narrow.

The weather is changeable and wet all year round, with mild summers in the south and cooler ones in Scotland. A light waterproof layer will see you through the whole trip, July included.

What to do in the UK

London

In London, the British Museum, the National Gallery and Tate Modern are all free to visit. Westminster, the Tower of London and the Thames cover the obvious sights, while Shoreditch, Notting Hill and the streets around Borough Market feel like 3 different cities within one.

Edinburgh and Scotland

Edinburgh brings together a medieval old town, a castle on volcanic rock and a cultural life that takes off every August with the Festival Fringe. Further north, the Highlands offer lochs, castles and a welcome sense of solitude. This is where a hire car really opens up the trip.

Birmingham and the Midlands

Birmingham is the UK’s second city, with a regenerated centre, navigable canals and a well-regarded food scene. It is also the most practical base for Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s home town, and for the Cotswolds, a little over an hour away by road.

Oxford and Cambridge, from London

Two university cities with centuries of academic history and architecture best explored on foot. Oxford is an hour from London by train and Cambridge slightly less, so both pair easily with the capital on the same trip.

Luggage for your flight to the UK

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

For a short break, cabin luggage is usually enough. If your trip links several cities or you are bringing your own hiking gear, check the conditions beforehand. You will find the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.

Do I need a passport to fly from Oviedo to the UK?

Yes. Since the UK left the European Union, the Spanish ID card (DNI) is no longer accepted and a valid passport is compulsory, for children too. You also need an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before boarding, and without it you will not be allowed on the flight.

Can I pay in euros in the UK?

No. The official currency in the UK is the pound sterling, and shops, transport and restaurants all charge in pounds.
