Flights to Spain from Munich

From Munich, Vueling flies direct to 21 destinations in Spain. Barcelona is around 2 hours away and Madrid around 2 and a half hours. Beyond those two, the options stretch across the Mediterranean, Andalusia, the islands and the Atlantic north.

Spain is really several countries in one, and what shapes your trip is not so much when you go as which of them you choose. With flights this short, a long weekend is enough for one city and a week lets you take in two or three.

What documents you need to travel to Spain

Spain and Germany are both members of the European Union and the Schengen Area, so German and other EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa.

Check it has not expired before you book: it is one of the most common reasons for being refused boarding. If you are travelling with children, each one needs their own. The European Health Insurance Card covers public healthcare during your stay. If you hold a passport from a non-EU country, check your case on the travel documents page.

What to know when you land in Spain

From the airport to the city centre. The main gateways have good transport links, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and Cercanías commuter trains link the terminals with Atocha. In Malaga, the commuter train serves the city centre and the Costa del Sol, and in Palma the shuttle bus covers the 8 km to the old town.

Mealtimes. This is the biggest change from Germany. Lunch in Spain is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner starts from 21:00, with many kitchens closed until then. Nobody sits down to dinner at 18:00, so adjust your plans on the first day.

High-speed rail. The AVE links Madrid and Barcelona in around 2 and a half hours, and lines run from Madrid to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. Stations sit right in the city centres, and trains keep time in a way that would not look out of place in Germany.

Climate by region. The north, from Galicia to the Basque Country, is damp and green all year round, not so different from Bavaria. The interior has summers above 40°C and cold winters. The Mediterranean coast, Andalusia and the islands get sunshine for most of the year.

The currency is the euro, and Spain uses type C and F plugs, at 230V.

What to do in Spain

City breaks: Barcelona and Madrid

Barcelona brings together the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, with a beach inside the city and the Boqueria market on the Ramblas. Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than a kilometre, with Malasaña and La Latina for nights out and Toledo half an hour away by train.

Andalusia

Seville has the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, flamenco in Triana and tiled courtyards, and it is at its best in spring. Granada has the Alhambra and the Generalife, Córdoba the Mosque-Cathedral, and Malaga the Picasso Museum and the Costa del Sol.

The islands

Palma de Mallorca pairs a Gothic cathedral facing the sea with the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site, and cycling routes that draw German riders every spring. Ibiza brings the coves and the nightlife, while Tenerife and Gran Canaria stay mild even in the depths of winter.

The green north

This is the part of Spain closest to the Bavarian climate: Atlantic, damp and green, with a concentration of acclaimed restaurants that is hard to match. Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the pintxos of the Casco Viejo, San Sebastián has La Concha, and Santiago de Compostela is where the Camino comes to an end.

Luggage for your flight to Spain

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

For a city weekend, cabin luggage is plenty. For a week on the coast, a family trip or a bike, check what your fare includes before you fly. You will find the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.

Frequently asked questions about flying from Munich to Spain

Which Spanish cities does Vueling fly to from Munich?

From Munich there are direct flights to 21 Spanish destinations, including Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Tenerife. Use the search tool on this page to see the full list of destinations and check availability on the dates you want to travel.

How long is the flight from Munich to Spain?

It depends on where you are going. The direct flight from Munich to Barcelona takes around 2 hours, and to Madrid around 2 and a half hours. Flights to Seville, Malaga or the Balearic Islands take a little longer, and the Canary Islands routes are the longest, given how far the islands lie from the mainland.

Can I travel to Spain with just a German ID card?

Yes. Spain and Germany are both in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so a valid national ID card is enough and you do not need a passport or a visa. Check the expiry date before you book, because you cannot board with an expired document.

How do I get from the airport to the city centre in Spain?

In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and Cercanías commuter trains connect with Atocha. In Malaga, the commuter train serves the city centre and the Costa del Sol, and in Palma the shuttle bus covers the 8 km to the old town.

Can I visit several Spanish cities on one trip?

Yes, and most people do. The AVE connects Madrid and Barcelona in under 3 hours, and Madrid and Seville in around 2 and a half hours. Stations are in the city centres, so linking up destinations does not mean heading back to the airport between stages of the trip.

Do flights from Munich to Spain earn Vueling Club points?

Yes, every flight from Munich operated by Vueling does, and joining the programme is free. You collect tier points on each flight. As you move up a tier, you get priority boarding: Priority boarding from the Plus tier and the highest boarding priority at the Premium tier, which makes a difference at busy airports.
