Flights to Spain from Faro
Vueling flies direct from Faro to 18 destinations in Spain. Flight times run from barely an hour to just over 2, depending on where you are heading, so a weekend in Spain really does go a long way.
Spain is not one single destination, and from the Algarve the distances are short in every direction. What shapes the trip is which of the four Spains you choose: the big cities, the Mediterranean coast, the islands or the green north.
What documents you need to travel to Spain
Spain and Portugal are both in the European Union and the Schengen Area, so Portuguese and other EU citizens only need a valid national ID card or passport, with no visa or extra paperwork.
Even though there are no border checks between the two countries, you must carry your documents with you throughout the trip, and it is worth checking they have not expired before you book. The European Health Insurance Card covers public healthcare during your stay. If you are travelling with children or on a passport from a non-EU country, check your case on the travel documents page.
What to know when you land in Spain
From the airport to the city centre. The main gateways have good transport links, so there is no need to book a transfer. In Barcelona, metro line 9 Sud and the Aerobús reach the centre in under half an hour. In Madrid, the metro and Cercanías commuter trains link the terminals with Atocha. In Seville, the dedicated airport bus runs to Santa Justa station and the centre.
Mealtimes. This is what catches most people out when they arrive from Portugal. Lunch in Spain is between 14:00 and 16:00 and dinner starts from 21:00, a good hour later than in the Algarve, and many kitchens stay closed until then.
Time difference. Mainland Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal all year round: both countries change their clocks on the same dates, but they sit in different time zones. Add the late mealtimes and the first day feels more out of step than you might expect.
High-speed rail. Madrid and Barcelona are around 2 and a half hours apart by train, and lines run from Madrid to Seville, Malaga and Valencia. The stations are right in the city centres, so you can link two or three destinations without going back to the airport.
The currency is the euro, and Spain uses type C and F plugs at 230V.
What to do in Spain
Seville and Andalusia
Of all the options, this is the closest in spirit to the Algarve. Seville brings together the Real Alcázar, the Giralda, flamenco in Triana and neighbourhood tapas bars, and it is at its best in spring. Granada adds the Alhambra and the Generalife, while Malaga has the Picasso Museum and the Costa del Sol.
Barcelona and the Catalan coast
Barcelona has the Sagrada Familia, Park Güell and the Gothic Quarter, plus a beach within the city. The Eixample, El Born and Poblenou each have a different feel just a few kilometres apart, and the Costa Brava is an hour away by car.
Madrid and central Spain
Madrid packs the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen into less than a kilometre, alongside historic markets and neighbourhoods such as Malasaña and La Latina. It is a city made for walking. Toledo and Segovia are both less than an hour away by train.
The islands
Palma de Mallorca pairs a medieval old town and a Gothic cathedral facing the sea with the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site. Ibiza is all coves and nightlife, while Tenerife and Gran Canaria stay mild all year, with Mount Teide as the landmark.
Luggage for your flight to Spain
What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.
For a weekend away, cabin luggage is usually enough. Sports equipment, musical instruments and pushchairs have their own conditions, so check them in advance. You will find the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
