Flights to Gambia from Barcelona

Vueling flies direct from Barcelona to Banjul in around 5 and a half hours, with no stops. Very few West African destinations can be reached from Spain on a single flight, and this is one of them.

Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa, and the whole of it is laid out along a river. That shapes the trip. The Atlantic coast is where you will find the accommodation and most of the life, while the interior is explored by following the river inland.

What documents you need to travel to Gambia

Gambia is outside the Schengen Area, so a passport is compulsory and a Spanish ID card (DNI) is not accepted. It must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into the country.

Spanish citizens do not need to apply for a visa in advance for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Health entry requirements may also apply depending on the country you are travelling from, and these are best sorted out several weeks ahead rather than in the last few days. Check your own situation on the travel documents page and with the health authorities before booking.

As this flight leaves the Schengen Area, you will go through passport control before boarding.

What to know when you land in Gambia

From the airport to the coast. The airport is about 25 km from Banjul, but most places to stay are not in the capital. They sit along the coastal strip of Kololi, Kotu and Bakau, which is a little closer. Most people arrive on a transfer booked through their hotel or negotiate a private taxi at the airport itself, agreeing the fare before getting in.

Cash. The dalasi is hard to get hold of outside the country, so you change money on arrival, either at the airport or at a bureau de change in Banjul. Beyond the main hotels, card acceptance is limited. Cash is simply how people pay here.

Two seasons. The dry season runs from November to May, with pleasant temperatures and clear skies, and it is when most travellers come. The rainy season, from June to October, brings humid heat and heavy showers, and in return the landscape is at its best.

Getting around. Shared taxis, known as bush taxis, are the usual way to travel and the one locals use. For long journeys or if you are carrying equipment, a private taxi negotiated at the airport or through your hotel leaves less room for surprises.

Gambia uses type G sockets, with three rectangular pins, at 230V. Local SIM cards are sold at the airport and in shops in Banjul.

What to do in Gambia

Banjul and the Atlantic coast

The capital, with Arch 22 and Albert Market, and the coastal areas of Kololi, Kotu and Bakau are where the hotels, restaurants and nightlife are concentrated. Almost everyone arrives here and plans the rest of the trip from this base, with long sandy beaches and quick access from the airport.

Abuko Nature Reserve

Just 25 km from Banjul, it fits into any itinerary. It is one of the best places in West Africa for birdwatching, with more than 270 species recorded in a small area. Half a day is enough, and you do not need to be a keen birder to find it worthwhile.

The River Gambia and the interior

Heading upriver by pirogue or local boat is what makes this trip more than a week on the beach. Expect mangroves, hippos, crocodiles and riverside towns such as Janjanbureh, where life carries on well away from the tourist coast. The Wassu stone circles, a World Heritage Site, lie on the same route. River Gambia National Park, with its chimpanzee island, is the reference point for this kind of trip, and Kiang West protects the largest stretch of savannah in the country.

Juffureh and the roots trail

A riverside village with enormous historical weight: it is the birthplace of Kunta Kinte, the central character of Roots. Many travellers from the African diaspora, in the Americas and beyond, come here on a journey of reconnection. It is best visited with a local guide who can explain what you are looking at.

Luggage for your flight to Gambia

What you can take depends on the fare you choose when booking. The simplest fare includes a personal item that fits under the seat in front, and from there you can add cabin or checked luggage.

Clothes take up little room on this trip, but camera gear, binoculars for birdwatching or hiking kit change the picture. Sorting out your luggage when you book avoids surprises at the check-in desk. Check the current conditions in Vueling’s luggage policy.
