Flights to Santiago

flights to Santiago de Compostela

Let's break some clichés: Santiago is no longer just destination for religious tourism, its cultural offerings are astonishing all year long. Its architecture isn't only heavy grey granite; álvaro Siza, Jean Nouvel and Peter Eisenman have projects throughout the city.

It doesn't always rain in Compostela, nor do you only eat seafood and turnovers. So you can prove what we are saying as true, Vueling now takes you to Santiago.

Restaurants in Santiago

Galician food is famous for its seafood, empanadas (turnovers), fish, and meats. If you would like to try it, we recommend escaping the noise of the Rúa del Franco. These are our suggestions.

Casa Marcelo

Marcelo Tejedor, the cook and owner of the restaurant, defines his food as «Galician for the product, singular for the contents, and fleeting by definition.» The suggestion is in the form of a unique menu that changes daily. Excellent and creative cuisine with products from the local market but if you want to eat in this restaurant, you will have to reserve a table days in advance. Remember, they are closed on Sundays and Tuesdays.
Rúa das Hortas, 1
(+34) 981 558 580

Sino

Located in the lower level of the hotel with the same name, the Sino doesn't only stand out for its cuisine. This modern place integrates the restaurant with an area for tapas and wines; all in an environment with down-tempo music, and from time to time, video-art projections and fashion shows of the latest fashion. Our culinary suggestion: don't miss out on the octopus with a “Mugardos” salsa…simply delicious.
Rúa Algalia de Abaixo, 33
(+34) 981 554 436

Casa San Nicolás

It can be found 5 minutes away from the old city by foot. In this old windmill, restored not too long ago, the minimalist décor contrasts with the structure of the old building. We recommend eating on the patio if the day is sunny.
Rúa Sar 1
(+34) 981 570 792

Enxebre

For those who want to taste authentic and traditional Galician cuisine: from seafood to broths and meats. It is located in the basement of the Reis Católicos Hostel.
Praza do Obradoiro, 1
(+34) 981 582 200

Cabaliño do Demo

A vegetarian suggestion on Porta do Camiño, at one of the entrances to the old city and just a step away from the CGAC (The Centre for Contemporary Galician Art) and Santo Domingos de Bonaval.
Aller Ulloa, 7

Don't miss... in Santiago

Cathedral

It is, in all likelihood, the main tourist attraction of the city. Built between the XI and XIX centuries, every one of its facades is a reflection of the different artistic period. The Obradoiro is the most photographed façade but don't forget to go by the A Quintana, where the famous Porta Santa is located and have something at one of the cafes in the plaza or simply sit on the stairs. If your intention is to see the famous Botafumeiro in action, you will have to go to the Misa del Peregrino (the Mass of the Pilgrim) during Holy Year or mass on July 25th, the rest of the other years.

Plaza do Obradoiro

The Obradoiro Plaza is the epicentre of Santiago de Compostela, from the urban point of view, to the architectural, cultural, tourist, and religious points of view. It is there were hundreds of pilgrims arrive during the entire year, except for the summer when thousands are on the pilgrimage. It is next to the cathedral, the Reyes Católicos hostel, the pazo de Xelmírez, the pazo de Raxoi, and the shortcut to the university.

Convent and Church of Santo Domingos de Bonaval

The church, which dates back to the XIV century, is gothic, and the convent unites various styles. Today, the convent houses a museum, exhibition halls, and concerts. Don't miss the cloister and the stairway of three roots.

CGAC

A building by architect, álvaro Siza, which houses the headquarters for the Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo (The Centre for Contemporary Galician Art). The most avant-garde work is organized for temporary exhibits in its different spaces. We recommend, if the day permits, a walk through the gardens, also designed by the Portuguese architect, which are shared by the neighbouring Convento de Santo Domingos de Bonaval.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00am to 8:00pm
Rúa Ramón Valle-Inclán s/n
