Airport de Sicily

Palermo International Airport, also known as Falcon-Borsellino or Punta Raisi, is one of the largest in Sicily. It has a terminal that operates to international destinations.

It is situated 32 km from Palermo, but perfectly connected to the urban area by buses, trains and taxis. Buses can also take you to other places on the island. The train has a Trinacria Express service, which goes straight into town once an hour. Taxis run from 6 am to 12 midnight. The journey lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Business hours in Sicily

In Palermo as in Sicily’s large towns, shop opening times oscillate between 9 am and 8 pm. In some villages inland they close at midday. Saturday opening times are from 9 am to 1 pm.

In areas with more tourism, you can shop even into the early hours of the morning. Some businesses stay open until midnight, including hair stylists and art galleries.

Many cafés, cake shops and pizzerias remain open almost round the clock, except from 2 to 6 am in the morning.

Don't miss... in Sicily

Palazzo dei Normanni and the Cappella Palatina

Currently this Palazzo is the seat of the Regional Parliament although the Norman monarchs originally used it as a Royal Palace. Inside you can view the Capella Palatina, a beautiful example of Norman art, with wooden ceilings and elaborate Byzantine mosaics in gold and blue.

The Cathedral

The Cattedrale di Palermo is a huge building built in the 12th Century by the Normans. It’s worth a visit, although its exterior has become seriously deteriorated in recent centuries. In spite of this, you’re sure to be enwrapped by its beauty.

Vucciria Market

This traditional market is a labyrinth of tiny streets surrounding the Piazza de San Domenico. It’s the oldest market in town and always has a bustling atmosphere, especially first thing in the morning. You can buy fish, herbs, vegetables and all manner of products typical to the region.

San Giovanni degli Eremeti

This 12th Century church was built in honour of Saint John of the Hermits. It is an original Arabic structure formed of five red ochre domes that roof what was once an ancient mosque. Inside, you can admire a beautiful cloister with a garden.

La Martorana or Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio

This exquisite building with a Baroque façade, interior bell tower and magnificent Byzantine mosaics was built in 1143. In the 15th Century it was ceded to the Order of Benedictine monks and their founder, Eloisa Martorana, who enlisted important artists to create these mosaics.
