Vueling's history
The origins of Vueling Airlines date back to the end of 2002, when Carlos Muñoz and Lázaro Ros established a promotional society that financed the market studies and economic viability studies necessary for the project.
During the next twelve months it evolved into a detailed preparation business and branding development plan and corporate image. Concurrently, they worked intensely on finding strategies that could consolidate the project on industrial, financial, and business levels, as well as the selection of the best management team for the company.

After that, all the efforts of the management team were dedicated to getting the AOC - airline operating certificate to officially become an airline. During that time, the first “headquarters” of the company was the unforgettable office located on Panamá street (Barcelona), courtesy of Ferran Conti from Planeta. It had just a few computers and chairs that too many people shared! Vueling began selling tickets on May 16, 2004, with a campaign of flights at a rate of 10 euros – more than 50,000 tickets were sold in 15 days.
Our first commercial flight (Barcelona-Ibiza) took place on July 1, 2004. The original fleet was comprised of 2 new A320’s, and the daily routes offered flights from Barcelona to destinations like Paris, Brussels, and Ibiza.
December 1st, 2006, marked a highly significant milestone for vueling, with our IPO (initial public offering) on the Madrid stock market. The offering included raising an additional €100 million of new capital for the company to further finance its expansion plans, especially with the addition of a third base outside Spain. In early 2007, vueling’s market capitalization ranges from €500 to €700 million.
